To live or not to live forever is the question !
Of late, there's lot of talk about humans
becoming immortal. I read some books which say that
time has come when man can realize his full potential,
and be capable of doing so many things that were not
imaginable before. Living for hundreds or thousands
of years is one of them.
Right now, there are tons of factors that hinder such
a possibility. The environment that we live in on a
day-to-day basis - pollution, stress etc take a toll
on the body. Gravitation, they say, is another thing
that makes the body age and go down.
Even if one overcomes these natural forces and prepare
to live for hundreds of years, there are other psychological
factors like the need to be accepted by the society when
one lives for so many years (imagine what your life insurance
company will say, for example !), seeing your nearest and
dearest die before your eyes, when you are still hale and
healthy, and of course, trying to find new relationships
after your old ones are gone, emotional disturbances by
seeing society and culture changing multiple times before
your eyes, etc.
Remember that one can maintain the body against the expected
natural forces, but no one has control over catastrophies
like accidents, when there could be damage to the body
which might not be repairable.
And finally, what would one do living so long ? What would
be one's goals if he knows that he will be living for hundreds
of years ?
